Frequently asked questions
Why is Edridge Road Community Health Centre closing?
The current contract between the GP partners and NHS South West London ends on 31st January 2024. NHS South West London explored different options however the surgery will now be closed from 1st February 2024. The surgery is closing because:
- There was overall a very low level of concern with the proposal to close the surgery during the patient engagement period. We would like to thank all patients who engaged with us either by attending the event or contacting us separately.
- We looked into finding someone else to take over the surgery. We contacted possible providers and looked at similar examples from the past. Because of the low number of registered patients, it was very unlikely that we would find a stable provider to run the surgery in the long term.
- We carried out an assessment of local GP surgeries and there is enough capacity at other local surgeries to take on patients registered at Edridge Road Community Health Centre. This includes the newly refurbished East Croydon Medical Centre, located at 59 Addiscombe Road, Croydon CR0 6SD.
How will the surgery closing affect me?
Edridge Road Community Health Centre will be closed from 1 February 2024. When the surgery closes, you will no longer be able to access GP services at this surgery. You and all members of your household who are currently registered with Edridge Road Community Health Centre will need to register with a new GP by 31 January 2024.
Will it still be possible to see the same GPs when the surgery closes?
Edridge Road Community Health Centre and East Croydon Medical Centre are run by the same group of GPs. So if you register with East Croydon Medical Centre, you may be able to see the same GPs. If you register with any other surgery, your GP will most likely not be the same.
How do I find a new GP surgery? You can find details of the surgeries closest to you at www.nhs.uk/service-search/find-a-gp. When I register with another GP surgery , what will happen to my medical records?
If you register with another surgery in England, your medical records will be transferred electronically to your new GP surgery within a few days and paper copies of your records will also be sent via a secure courier.
If your new GP surgery is in a different country in the UK, your medical records cannot be transferred electronically, so paper copies will be sent to your new GP surgery via a secure courier.
What will happen if I don’t register with another GP surgery?
If you don’t register with another surgery it will be more difficult for you to access care and advice from a GP and other healthcare professionals. You may also miss out on vital services such as cervical, breast and bowel screening programmes, childhood immunisations and seasonal flu and covid vaccinations.
What will happen with outstanding test results or letters from hospitals?
When you register with another GP surgery any test results and letters will be sent to your new GP surgery.
What should I do about my repeat prescriptions?
If you take regular medication, please make sure you ask Edridge Road Community Health Centre for an adequate supply before registering with a new surgery. Your new GP may need to review your prescriptions before issuing them, which could cause a delay. We advise ordering repeat prescriptions, so you have at least two weeks’ supply, before registering with a new surgery.
Will opening hours be the same at my new GP surgery?
All Croydon GP surgeries are open from 8am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday, with some open longer.
Extended access arrangements also mean that all patients registered with a Croydon surgery have access to GP appointments seven days a week, from 8am to 8pm.
Additionally, there are three GP Hubs in Croydon which treat both minor injuries and minor illnesses requiring same day care – for both children and adults. They are located in Central Croydon, Purley and Parkway (New Addington).
To book an appointment, please call NHS 111 first to discuss your symptoms.
What will happen with the other healthcare services provided at Impact House when the surgery closes?
The emergency dental service and health promotion services that run from Impact House will not be affected. These services will continue to run as normal.
Will people moving to Croydon be able to access a GP surgery?
Yes, we will ensure that everyone in Croydon can access a GP surgery. We know that more people are moving to Croydon and will continue to look at whether we have enough GP provision in the area for everyone, and make decisions accordingly.
