I worked as a nurse in renal back in Australia before moving over to London and landing my first permanent role in the NHS as a Staff Nurse in Cardiology at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in 1996.
One year later, I moved over to the Royal London as a Clinical Support Nurse and supported the wards and A&E department at night. I met my wife who also worked at the hospital, and after a year working night shifts, I went back to renal as a Charge Nurse.
I was particularly interested in clinical governance and worked in a patient safety role before becoming Head of Patient Safety at Guys and St Thomas’ which I did for two years.
I then moved out of the NHS and became a Patient Safety Director for BT for 10 years working on global digital and technology projects, which was really interesting but it wasn’t long until I returned to the NHS.
I was a Programme Director for Outcomes Based Commissioning in Croydon which led to the development of OneCroydon Alliance – something which I am very proud of being a part of.
I have been in South West London ever since and I’m really proud to work for the NHS.
I’m still a registered practicing nurse after all these years. During the pandemic, I was able to help in an operational role at the Nightingale Hospital at Excel, and I was giving vaccinations at the vaccine site at Crystal Palace Football ground.
My wife Sarah still works at the Royal London as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in HIV and my daughter is completing her first year as a student Nurse, and so I guess the NHS runs thick in our blood!
